"Ok folks. I just finished reading a very very good book titled Pickin’ Bone in the Bible Belt. Written by our very own local author Bill Tabor. This is his third book. His first was Tipple Holler and the second was Bamboo Sally.
Bill has a unique writing style that enables his readers to actually feel like they are living the experience that are reading. Not only are the stories of top quality in content but in the case of his most recent book, I really felt that I was there observing the story line unfold. And after all isn’t that what all good writers seek?
Myself as a kid, I grew up in coal country and my Grand dad, my dad as well as my uncles from both sides of my family worked in the coal mines. So I’ve heard many stories about the early struggles of men who worked in the mine for very little money. My grand dad once told me he got paid 0.50 a day. That’s fifty cents a day.
Without giving anything away I’ll just say that Bills latest book deals with the hardships and struggles of miners in Boissevain,VA. and the rough lives they lived just prior to coal being organized by labor unions.
Picking Bone in the Bible Belt is a great read and I highly recommend it especially if you now have or ever have had someone in your family that worked in a coal mine.

We are excited to have Joe Woodson join us on the porch this year.
Through the 1980s and early 1990s, Joe played in various rock bands and toured with The Black Jacks and the Nationals. Some of Joe’s songs began to find air play on college stations and area radio stations. With the country craze, Joe tried his hand at becoming a “country” singer: He played a few showcase gigs in Nashville, TN, but found his heart fell back to the acoustic traditional music roots of his youth.
Joe’s tunes have been played by stations throughout the United States, France, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden to name a few. Joe continues to perform at festivals – The Festival of the Autumn moon, Centerfest, Mumfest, Carrboro Music Festival, and the North Carolina Museum of History. Jordan Koronet, a frequent jammer, and Joe placed third in the 2006 North Carolina State Fair vocal duo competition.

Mountain Top Music: Valley Grass
Big Walker Lookout
We are excited to have Valley Grass back to play on the porch.
Valley Grass is a bluegrass gospel and bluegrass band that originated out of Rich Valley Presbyterian Church. The band was started in March 2006 by Raymond Campbell, former member of Fescue, as a result of individuals who were eager to learn how to play a musical instrument met weekly at the church and from there the group was formed. Several members of the group have been and will continue to be mentors to the youth that are interested in the learning the music.
Valley Grass has played at numerous gospel and bluegrass venues over the past few years. Some of those include churches, community events, the Pickin’ Porch, Grace Healthcare, Crooked Road General Store, Smyth County Jam and the Heartwood. We play once a month at Valley Health Care and twice a month at the Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute as part of our contribution back to the community.
Everyone in the group holds dear to their faith and thanks God for the talents He has placed in their lives. We give God all the praise and the glory for the wonderful things He has done in our lives and the lives of others through our music ministry.

We are excited to have Bill and Maggie back to play on the porch. They are joined by Jody King on banjo and mandolin and his daughter, Kayla on bass. They are going by the name Gen 3 as they are 3 generations coming together to play and sing traditional, bluegrass and gospel music. Maggie is on the dobro and Bill plays guitar. Bill made both of the instruments they play. He also is an authorized Martin warranty repair man and a builder of basses.
Bill and Maggie have played on the Song of the Mountains and will be playing on Wednesdays this summer at the Blueridge Music Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Georgia Randall was born in Norfolk, Virginia. She began singing Gospel in the church at a young age. She can barely remember the memories her grandmother shared of her being a featured vocalist in the church before even beginning elementary school. In addition to Gospel music, her early influences were in Soul and Blues, listening to the likes of Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday.
By the age of 15 Georgia had begun her professional career as a front singer and embraced the music of Motown, Rock & Roll, and the San Francisco sound, along with her continued love of the Blues. By age 17, Georgia left her Virginia home and hit the road fronting several rock & roll and show bands. Many years later she took a few guitar lessons so she could begin a solo career.
Within 3 years of mostly teaching herself to play guitar she was booked weekly in Florida as a solo act. At the suggestion of a friend, Georgia began to write her own music. Her voice has been compared to Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, and Melissa Etheridge but make no mistake, Georgia’s style is all her own.
All Mountain Top Music concerts are free to the public. The performers donate their time and talent for our enjoyment, so all tips and donations are accepted and encouraged! CD's are available for purchase. Please show your appreciation for these musicians and their music.
Virginia's oldest privately owned scenic attraction, Big Walker Lookout & BW Country Store has been owned and operated by the same family for over 75 years. It features more than 25 local artisans, crafters, and musicians that demonstrate their talents each weekend from May through October. Local authors do book signings and have books for sale all summer long. Big Walker Lookout, a Crooked Road venue, will host this Summer's Mountain Top Music featuring local musicians, some returning favorites as well as fresh new groups & bands.
Bring your lawn chairs (or use our picnic pavilion) and a picnic lunch and get ready for an afternoon of good music and fun! Hot dogs, snacks, drinks, & delicious ice cream are available for purchase at Big Walker Lookout in the BW Country Store. Don't miss this fun!!
