Big Walker Lookout & BW Country Store
65 Years of Thinking & Succeeding "Outside of the Box"
Wytheville, VA - May, 24 2012 - In
this day & age of big box stores and small business uncertainties it is
refreshing, even surprising, to see a locally family owned business, not only
"still in business" after 65 years, but also thriving! Big Walker Lookout and
the BW Country Store, located in the small Southwest Virginia town of
Wytheville, is doing just that!
Big Walker Mountain, which is named for pioneer explorer Dr. Thomas Walker, is home to Big Walker Lookout & the BW Country Store in historic Wytheville, Virginia. At an elevation of 3,405, this scenic location is backdrop to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. And climbing the 100 foot lookout tower on site affords visitors breathtaking views unlike any other, hence their tag line "Where Only the Birds See More!" The BW Country Store, at Big Walker Lookout, is a good old fashioned country store, and features the handmade wares of local artists & crafters from throughout the Southwest Virginia Region, as well as a wide variety of music CD's from Appalachian bands and musicians. Old fashioned fudge, homemade jams, jellies, & relishes, and 12 delicious flavors of Virginia made, hand dipped, all nutural, super premium ice cream are part of the unique local flavor available in the country store. In addition, the BW Country Store offers one of the areas largest selections of gifts, home decor, collectibles, and novelty items. As if the wide array of goods available in the store weren’t enough to keep customers coming back, on weekends May through October, the BW Country Store is host to local musicians and talented groups that perform free concerts on the front porch for their visitors to enjoy! Patrons are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or take a break in the large picnic area to enjoy the entertainment, and on occasion visitors are known to join in on music jams or break out into the old time dance known as “flat footing” right there on the spot. Adding an educational spice to the mix, historic demonstrations, such as, Lye Soap making, Apple Butter cooking, and Blacksmithing also take place on the weekends. These demonstrations are a great learning tool which is enjoyed by both the local community and travelers visiting Big Walker Lookout! Big Walker Lookout is located on the county lines of Wythe & Bland Counties, both of which, are steeped in Civil War history, Rich Local Culture, and Appalachian Heritage. Adding value to the already numerous features right on site at Big Walker Lookout, are the multiple hiking, biking, and birding trails that are maintained throughout the region, with plenty of camping, fishing, and outdoor activities for enthusiasts of all types and ages. Motorcyclists and car touring groups find the winding back roads and country landscape of the areas mountain roads to be unmatched. Not the least of which is the unspoiled scenic beauty of the 2 National Forests (Jefferson and Washington National Forests) that are back to back in these counties, as well as the Beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway for visitors to the area to take advantage of.
